Ted Lucas Smith, Sr. of Batesville, MS, passed away on January 14, 2025, at the age of 85. Born on July 23, 1939, in Charleston, MS to the late Dr. Monroe Eugene Smith and Evelyn Smith, Ted lived a life rich in accomplishments and deep in character.
A proud alumnus of the University of Missouri, where he earned his BA in Journalism, and the University of Mississippi, from which he obtained his Juris Doctorate in Law, Ted dedicated a substantial portion of his life to serving the community. He worked as a United States Page for Congressman Jamie Whitten and spent 52 years practicing law in Batesville, MS, between 1963 and 2015. His dedication to his profession was matched only by his love for writing; he was a prolific reader and noted short story writer for the Panolian and a syndicated columnist throughout Mississippi. His storytelling prowess was recognized on Mississippi Public Radio, where he shared his unique experiences, including an engaging interview at Graceland with Elvis and Vernon Presley, as well as an entertaining snatch of life from a fan attending an Ole Miss vs LSU football game in Baton Rouge.
Ted was not only known for his professional achievements but also for his musical talents. A gifted musician, he played several instruments including the piano, guitar, fiddle, and trombone. His innate ability to blend humor with profound insights made him a cherished figure among family and friends. Ted was often recognized for his spiritual depth and ability to offer thoughtful sayings that reflected his caring nature and understanding of life’s complexities.
He married Mary Nell Smith on December 17, 1961, who preceded him in death. Ted will be remembered lovingly by his sons, Tyler Lee Smith and Ted L. Smith II (Kristin); grandchildren: Emilee Smith, Zackary “Zack” Smith (Wrennie), Alex Smith, Hart Smith, Ashley Grace Smith, Austin Smith, Steele Smith, as well as his great-grandchildren, Harper Smith and Joshua Smith; brother, Gene Smith (Betty); nephews, Michael and David Smith; nieces, Lezlie, Tiffany and Eve; and uncle, Charles McClemore (Patsy). He also mourned the loss of his grandson, Ted Lucas "Luke" Smith III, and his sister, Sandra.
A Celebration of Life service for Ted will be held at First Baptist Church in Batesville, MS, on January 30, 2025, at 1:00 PM.
He leaves behind a legacy of compassion, artistry, and wisdom that will resonate through the lives he touched. Ted Lucas Smith, Sr. will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
