Robert Doyle Simmons, 90, of Southaven, MS, passed away Sunday February 18, 2024 at Diversicare Nursing Home in Southaven, MS.
A memorial service will be held Friday February 23, 2024 at 2pm in the Martin Willingham Memorial Chapel of Wells Funeral Home.
Mr. Simmons was born April 20, 1933 in Pope, MS, to the late James Wesson Simmons and Verna Marie McCullough Simmons. After completing one year of college, Mr. Simmons enlisted in the United States Army. Upon completion of his military service, Mr. Simmons was employed with BNSF Railroad where he retired as a switchman with 36 years of service. In his earlier years, Mr. Simmons loved to hunt and fish and was an avid outdoorsman. He loved bluegrass music and traveled extensively with his wife, Celia, to bluegrass festivals all over. After the passing of his wife, he continued to travel to bluegrass festivals with his daughter Kimberly, until his health no longer permitted.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Simmons was preceded in death by his wife, Celia Brown Simmons and his brother, Winford Simmons.
The family he leaves to cherish his memory include his daughter, Kimberly Blackburn of Southaven, MS, three sons, Roger Simmons, of Florida, Randy Simmons, of Wisconsin, and Robert Simmons, of Batesville, MS, four siblings, Roy Simmons (Becky), of Pope, MS, John Ed Simmons (Brenda), of Winona, MS, Jackie Morrow, of Batesville, MS, and Bill Arnold Simmons (Gail), of Raymond, MS, eleven grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren.
