Rev. Robert Alvin “Bob” Hickey, age 83, passed away Friday, September 6, 2019, at Baptist Desoto Hospital in Southaven, MS.
Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Monday, September 9, 2019, at the First Baptist Church in Batesville, MS with interment to follow at Barbee Cemetery in Lula, MS. The family will be receiving friends prior to service on Monday beginning at 12:30 in the sanctuary of the First Baptist Church.
Bob was born April 5, 1936 in Sardis, MS to the late Glover Chester and Mattie Lillian Arnold Hickey. He honorably served his country in the U.S. Army and was discharged after achieving the rank of Master Sergeant. Bob went on to serve the State of Mississippi as a Mississippi State Trooper. He began his career as a state trooper in 1963. He was promoted to a Public Affairs Officer in 1976. He served as Chaplain of Troop E. He won the National Uniformed Officers’ Award in 1982. He won the Safer Rural Mississippi Award 5 years consecutively. He retired in 1986 as a Staff Sgt. after 23 years service. Following his career as a state trooper, Bob worked for Mississippi Farm Bureau as a safety specialist for thirteen years. All throughout his working life, the Lord was slowly leading his heart to His ministry. After being called and licensed into the ministry, Bob served for 10 years as pastor for Walnut Baptist Church and from there, he spent the next twenty-three years as pastor of Union Baptist Church in Sardis, MS. Bob and his wife Alice, enjoyed Sunday afternoon drives and spending time with their family, friends and grandchildren. Traveling to the mountains and just taking road trips were very special to them. He always enjoyed pot luck dinners with his church family, but most importantly, spending time with the Lord and in His Word, is where Bob found his peace.
Bob’s loving and caring memory will be cherished most by his wife of sixty-three years, Alice Richardson Hickey of Senatobia, MS; daughter, Kimberly Hickey Boatwright and husband, Steven, of Millington, TN; sister, Ruth Ann Harmon of Gallatin, TN; three grandchildren, Skipper Alexander Boatwright, Steven Zachary Boatwright, Sara Annalea Boatwright; two great-grandchildren, Soren Alexander Boatwright and Atticus Charles Boatwright.
Along with his parents, Bob was preceded in death by a brother, Chester Lee Hickey, and a son, Richard Allen “Skipper” Hickey
