Robert L. Benson, “Benny”, age 83, born on December 30th, 1939, of Hattiesburg, MS (formerly Madisonville, TX) went to be with the Lord on Nov 3, 2023.
Benny is survived by his wife of over 40 years Martha, son Jerry Lynn Butler (Deloris) of Hattiesburg, MS., daughter Jill Moore of College Station, TX., daughter-in-law Maricel Butler of Wylie, TX., granddaughters Angelie (Kevin) of Owasso, OK., Gabriela, Alexandra, and Bricia, all of Wylie, TX., Grandson Tyler Moore, great-children Vinlie and Amarra, brothers Jimmy (Robin) and Ronnie, both of Texas, along with numerous beloved nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father John L. Benson and bonus Mother Wanda, Mother Elizabeth Benson, son Jefferey Wayne Butler, and sister Joy Benson.
Benny will be remembered as an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and share his knowledge of archery. He also loved riding horses and working with cattle. Benny was a positive person with a great sense of humor. He loved a good joke and despite his illness, he found the strength to joke around with his granddaughters and sing with them just a few days before his homecoming. He had a wonderful voice and a passion for singing. After a lifetime of listening to his deep, rich bass voice belt out his favorite gospel and Elvis tunes, “Take Me Home, Country Roads”, is the last song Benny sang to us. The only thing Benny loved more than the outdoors and singing was the love he had for his family.
The family would like to thank the staff at Bedford Care Center of Hattiesburg, MS., and Forrest General Hospice for their dedicated and loving care over the last 5 years, especially the last 2 months.
Benny will be laid to rest with a graveside service led by Bro. Timothy Butler at Chapel Hill Cemetery in Pope, MS. on November 10th at 11:30 AM.
