Mildred Shinn Travis, 99, of Batesville, MS,
died peacefully in her sleep at Baptist
Memorial Hospital in Oxford, MS November 9.
She was born in Pope, MS on February 22,
1919, the youngest daughter of Selma
Vance Shinn and Erma Wray Shinn.
After a two year courtship, Mildred married
James L. Travis, Jr. in 1935, a marriage that lasted
72 years. James, the love of her life, died in
January, 2008.
She was predeceased by her sister, Helen
Wray Hill, and her nephew, Edwin ill.
She is survived by her children James L. Travis,
III and wife Patricia Hazel Travis; Albert L. Travis
and wife Maureda Hanna Travis; her grandchildren,
Rene Travis Tyre, Christopher Haward Travis,
Lance Cooper Travis, and Allyson Travis Gonzalez;
great-grandchildren, Adam Bower Travis,
Zachary Mitchell Travis, Cooper Hawthorne Travis,
Brady Ryan Travis, Sergio Alex Solis, Aidan Rohan
Rebello, and Brooklyn Grace Gonzalez; niece, Billie
Cook, nephew, Jim Flanagan, second cousins, Willa
Carr and Mary Jane Chapman, and Jimmy Pittinger,
whom she and James considered their third son.
Mildred lived in Batesville, MS , where she was
an active member of First Baptist Church, teaching
children and young people, hosting many meals
to friends of all ages, and being part of a group of
friends called the Stitchers for over 50 years. She
worked in the Tax Collecters’ office while her husband
was sheriff, and was an ardent supporter of his lengthy
career as county supervisor
In the early years of their marriage she played a
significant role in their farming operations, assisting in
the strawberry harvest and cooking for some of the farm
employees.
After her sons left home for college she completed her
high school education. She then attended Northwest
Junior College in Senatobia, Miss.
For the past nine years she had made her home
at Providence Assisted Living (formerly Fairfield
Assisted Living), in Batesville.
Hers was a life of loving, learning, hospitality,
taking care of her beloved husband and living out
her faith in her daily living.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to First
Baptist Church, the Mississippi Baptist Children’s Home,
or to a charity of your choice.
