Martin E. Jones, Jr.

Martin Emanuel "Bud". Jones, Jr., age 91, of Oxford, MS, passed away at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford, April 19, 2017.  Funeral services for Mr. Jones will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 23, 2017 in the Martin Willingham Memorial Chapel of Wells Funeral Hone in Batesville, MS. The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 5:00 to 8:00 at Wells Funeral Home. Interment will follow the service at Forrest Memorial Park in Batesville. Bud was born on October 11, 1925 in Sardis, MS to Martin Emanuel "Mannie" Jones and Loura Cabell Bratton Jones. He was a graduate of Sardis High School.  Bud enlisted in The U.S. Navy during WWII on August 19, 1943 and served until February 9, 1946. He served as a minesweeper in the South Pacific. While in the Navy, Bud ranked as Electrician's Mate, Third Class (EM3c) Bud attended Northwest MS Junior College and later graduated from Mississippi State as an Electrical Engineer. Bud and Hazel moved to Memphis, TN following his graduation where he was employed by Memphis Light, Gas, and Water until he accepted a position with The Rural Electrical Administration and they moved to Washington, D.C. In 1957 they moved back to Memphis where Bud Worked as an Electrical Engineer (Corrosion Dept.), with Memphis Light, Gas, and Water, retiring in 1989. Following his retirement, MLGW rehired Bud as a consultant. Bud and Hazel moved to Oxford, MS where they have lived about twenty years. Bud was a lifetime member of the VFW and the American Legion, a volunteer at Veteran's Home in Oxford, Retired Senior Volunteer Program and previously a member of Sons of Confederacy. Survivors include his wife of 70 years Hazel Louise Wright Jones of Oxford, MS, his son Marty Jones of Plano, TX, one sister, Annie Jones Vinson of Sardis, one brother-in-law, Donald Wright of Batesville, five sisters-in-law, Jeanette Smith (Danny), Judy Pratt (Hunter), Sylvia Hadinger (Paul), all of Batesville, and Priscilla Carter (Darrel) and Susan Stevens (Skip) of Sardis as well as a host of friends and relatives. Bud is preceded in death by his parents. Martin Emanuel "Mannie" Jones and Loura Cebell Bratton Jones, one brother Tom Jones and three sisters Martha Lewis, Mary Ellen Vinson, and Faye Conner.
