Senior Chief John Michael Havas, Jr., age 86, passed away Saturday morning, November 17, 2018, at Baptist Hospital in Oxford, MS.
Graveside services will be 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, November 21, 2018, at the North Mississippi Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Kilmichael, MS. There will be no visitation prior to the service.
John Havas, Jr. was born January 31, 1932 in Morristown, NJ to the late John Michael Havas, Sr. and Barbara Wright Havas. He served his country honorably during the Vietnam War with the Marine Combat Division as a Navy Corpsman. He retired from the U.S. Navy with over twenty years of service, as a Senior Chief. Following his retirement, he was a nursing home administrator. For the past several years, he has been residing at the North Mississippi Veterans Home in Oxford, MS. He was instrumental in implementing the procedures of honoring veterans once they passed away at the Veterans home with taps and a draped flag. He served as President and Vice-President of the Residence Council.
Gpaw, as he was affectionately known as to his family and close friends, loved fishing, gardening, history, and war movies. He loved playing dominoes with his buddies at the veterans home, and especially loved his longtime pet dog, “Puppy”. G-Paw's memory and great sense of humor will be cherished by all that knew him. He leaves behind a daughter, Brenda Bell of Memphis, TN; son, John Michael Havas, III of Sardis, MS; two sisters, Barbara Murray of Easton, PA, Rosemary Mathlery of Midlothian, VA; brother, Peter Havas of NC; six grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his two wives, Dolores F. Havas and Zula Havas, and one daughter, Loré Eskridge.
