James Horace "Jimmy" Brown, 77, of Pope, MS, passed away Wednesday November 8, 2023 on his beloved farm in a tractor accident.
The funeral service will be held Saturday, November 11, 2023 at 11am at Pope Baptist Church. The family will receive friends beginning at 9am. Interment will follow in Brown Family Cemetery in Pope.
Jimmy was born January 6, 1946 to the late Taylor Milton Brown and Elizabeth Shaw Brown in Pope, MS. A 1964 graduate of South Panola High School, Jimmy went on to earn his bachelor's degree in agriculture from Mississippi State University in 1969. After graduating, Jimmy served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War and was a Purple Heart recipient. After his military service was completed, Jimmy returned home. Jimmy married Sylvia Kay Hawkins Brown on September 17, 1971 and together they shared 52 years of marriage together. Jimmy worked as a Letter Carrier for the United States Postal Service until retiring after 30 years of service. Jimmy was a lifelong member of Pope Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher. Jimmy loved his farm and hunting. He was a master woodsman, avid storyteller, runner, and loved God and people.
In addition to his parents, Jimmy was preceded in death by four sisters, Carol Crysler, Kathy Sullivan, Judy Knighton and Billie Capwell, and one brother, Tommy Brown.
The family he leaves to cherish his memory include his wife, Sylvia Hawkins Brown, of Pope, MS, two children, Beth Brown Campbell (Jason), of Fulton, MS, and Patrick Brown (Cherish), of Caledonia, MS, three grandchildren, Lauren Addison Brown, Gracen Nicole Brown (Tristan Boyette), and Hayden Sidney Campbell, and four siblings, Barbara Watts, of Pope, MS, Wanda Griffin, of Memphis, TN, Bobby Brown, of Olive Branch, MS, and Ricky Brown, of Pope, MS.
Memorial contributions may be made to Pope Baptist Church, Gideons International, or a charity of your choice.
