Margaret Gwin Ferrell Chunn, a resident of Oxford, Mississippi, passed away on Wednesday, November 15, 2023, after a brief illness.
She was born on February 12, 1942, in Oxford, Mississippi, to Vernon Ferrell and Gray Gwin Ferrell. Gwin attended school in Batesville, where she met her high school sweetheart, George Darrell Chunn, whom she married in Batesville in 1961.
Gwin received a BS degree from Arkansas State University and an MS and PhD from the University of Mississippi. She had a long career as an educator, first as a public-school teacher and administrator. Her final years as an educator were in upper-level administration at Phillips College and then as president of Virginia College.
She was an accomplished seamstress and needlework artist. Many family members and friends were grateful recipients of her creations. Gwin also enjoyed playing bridge and traveling with family and friends.
Gwin’s Christian faith was the center of her life. She was active in numerous church activities, particularly Bible studies, most recently at First Baptist Church in Oxford. Not only was she active in churches she attended, but she also contributed to her communities through volunteering with various organizations.
Survivors include her beloved husband and her children, Margaret Cashiola (Randy) and George Chunn (Ann), along with grandchildren, Allison Cashiola Jasek (Jon) and Brittni Chunn McKetta (Kevin) and great-grandchildren, Nora Jasek and Myla and Madi McKetta. She also leaves a sister, Judy Dye and brother, Vernon Ferrell, a beloved cousin, Jackie Hutson and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial service will be at 4:00 on Saturday, November 18 at Wells Funeral Home, Batesville. Visitation will begin at 3:00 at the funeral home. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Wounded Warrior Project, Mississippi Baptist Children’s Home or First Baptist Church, Oxford.
