Gertie O'Conner Mathews, age 79, passed away Friday morning at Diversicare in Batesville, MS. Gertie was the widower of the late Donald Mathews.
Funeral services will be Sunday, March 18, 2018 at 3:00 p.m. in the Martin Willingham Memorial Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with interment to follow in Longtown Cemetery near Crenshaw, MS. The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service.
Gertie was born on February 27, 1939 in Panola County, MS to the late Herman and Gertie Mae Adams O'Conner. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Batesville and was a retired factory worker. Gertie enjoyed working in her garden, going to flea markets and yard sales, and loving on children. Also, earlier in her life she enjoyed sewing quilts and pillows.
Those she leaves behind to cherish her loving memory include her son, Donald "Bo" Mathews of Batesville, MS; three sisters, Elizabeth Sanders of Como, MS, Merlene Gordon of Senatobia, MS, and Earlene Clark of Alamo, TN; one brother, Howard O'Conner of Pontotoc, MS; seven grandchildren, Chris Aven, Scott Mathews, Jacob Mathews, Nikki Mathews, Jeremy Mathews, Caleb Mathews, and Blake Mathews and 5 great grandchildren.
Along with Gertie's parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Donald Mathews.
