Winston Durwood Gordon, Jr., age 72, passed away Thursday evening at his home in Batesville, MS.
The family will be having a memorial gathering Sunday afternoon, June 9, 2019, at the Batesville Presbyterian Church at 1:00 P.M. followed by a memorial service beginning at 2:00 P.M.
Durwood was born April 28, 1947 in Morton, MS to the late Winston Durwood Gordon, Sr. and Yvonne Hoover Gordon. He was retired from the United State Postal Service after thirty years of service, and honorably served in the Mississippi National Guard. He enjoyed woodworking, golf, sports of all kinds, and most importantly, Durwood loved people.
Durwood was a graduate of South Panola High School where he was selected first team Delta Valley Conference in Football, Basketball and Baseball in his junior year and senior year. He was also selected Mr. South Panola in 1965. Following a stellar high school career, He attended and graduated from the former Memphis State University. While at Memphis State, Durwood led the Tiger Freshman Team to an undefeated season playing quarterback and punter. He then finished out his college playing time as the punter for Memphis State. Durwood was an M Club member of the University of Memphis.
After his retirement, Durwood spent the majority of his time honing is his talents as a cattleman. He has hosted numerous universities and state cattleman associations to his farm to explain his exemplary way of raising cattle. Durwood is also a past president of the Panola County Cattleman’s Association.
His loving and caring memory will live on through his wife, Melinda Warren Gordon of Batesville, MS; sister, Sue Anne Hughes (Tommy) of Clarksdale, MS; brother, Chuck Gordon (Sheri) of Franklin, TN; sister-in-law, Sharon Lovelace (Dr. Mike) of Oxford, MS; three nieces, Hoover Gunn, Meredith Poore and Courtney McLemore; four nephews, Vernon Thomas “Tripp” Hughes, III, Winston Gordon, James Cooper Gordon and Tyler Lovelace; four great nieces and four great nephews.
Along with his parents, Durwood was preceded in death by his brother, Reggie Gordon.
The family request, that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Batesville Presbyterian Church / Reggie Gordon Flower Fund.
