Charles Edward “Sonny” Smith, age 84, passed away Friday, March 30, 2018, at Jackson Madison General Hospital in Jackson, TN.
Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M. Tuesday, April 3, 2018 in the Martin Willingham Memorial Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the family receiving friends two hours prior to the service. The interment will follow in Magnolia Cemetery with military honors being presented by the U.S. Army.
Sonny was born June 22, 1933 in Sardis, MS to the late James Joseph and Annie Mae McCarver Smith. He was a member of Pope Baptist Church in Pope, MS and honorably served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Sonny retired from Mohawk Tire and Rubber Company in West Helena, AR. after twenty-five years as the Quality Control Manager. Following his retirement, he went on to be the caretaker for Batesville Magnolia Cemetery from 1981 to 1997. When Sonny found time away from work, he enjoyed fishing, camping, and going to the beach and mountains. His most loved past-time was spoiling his grandchildren.
Sonny leaves a loving legacy that will be cherished by his wife of sixty-three years, Edna Hudson Smith of Batesville, MS; two daughters, Deb Smith Whitten (Presley) of Milan, TN, Joyce Smith Robertson (Rickey) of Memphis, TN; son, Charles Glenn Smith (Sherry) of Birmingham, AL; five grandchildren, Jason Slayton (Dawn) of Batesville, MS, Jaclyn Cook (Bryan) of Milan, TN, Charles Allen Smith of Birmingham, AL, James Nicholas Slayton of Milan, TN, Christopher Kyle Smith of Birmingham, AL; six great-grandchildren, Dylan Cook of Milan, TN, Jay Slayton of Batesville, MS, Ethan Cook of Milan, TN, Landon Slayton of Milan, TN, Will Slayton of Batesville, MS, James Logan Slayton of Milan, TN.
Besides his parents, Sonny was preceded in death by three grandchildren, Benjamin Shields, Tony Robertson, Charles Nicholas Slayton; three sisters, Daisy Mae Gaines, Bessie Mae Fite, Ola Mae Harper; two brothers, James Smith and Joe Smith.
