A graveside service will be held on Sunday, September 27, 2009 at Old Lebanon Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Ackerman, MS at 2:00 p.m. with Reverand Johnny Walker presiding.
A visitation will be held at Wells Funeral Home on Saturday evening, September 26, 2009 from 5-8 p.m. in Batesville, MS. (If traveling on I-55 N, please take exit #246 'NORTH' Batesville, Exit. Then take a left onto Hwy 35 and drive 1 mile, funeral home is on left.)
Mr. Hamby was born in Greenwood, MS on December 5, 1946 to Rosa Annette Eudy Hamby and Thomas G. Hamby, Sr.
John was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Jackson, MS. He attended Mississippi State University and later transfered to Millsaps College, where he received his degree. John was an environmental chemist for both Georgia Pacific and Dynea Corporation. He had retired from Dynea Corporation. Mr. Hamby had worked as a coach and teacher in several Mississippi public school systems, including: Eupora, St. Andrews, Duck Hill, Mathiston and Weir. After his retirement, John had become an avid nature photographer.
Mr. Hamby is survived by his wife Nan Crosby Hamby of Jackson, MS; two sons: Rett Hamby and Robin Hamby both of Ruston, LA; one sister: Annette Hamby Hutcherson of Lakeland, FL and one brother, Thomas G. "Tom" Hamby, Jr of Stuart, MS; three grandchildren: Paisly Jane Hamby, Sailor Barnett Hamby and Olivia Jane Hamby.
He is preceded in death by his first wife, Jane Robinson Hamby and his parents: Rosa Annette Eudy Hamby & Thomas G. Hamby, Sr.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be sent to Millsaps College, 1701 North State St., Jackson, MS 39210 or Strawberry Plains Audobon Center, 285 Plains Rd, Holly Springs, MS 38635.
Driving directions to cemetery: From Louisiana, take I-20 to Jackson, MS, then to MS Hwy 25 to Louisiville, from there take Hwy 15 to Ackerman. Travel through the town to the intersection of Hwy 15 & Hwy 12. Go West (left) on Hwy 12 travel .75 mile and look for a sign on right for South Union Road, follow the sign to Old Lebanon. Travel approximately 2.8 miles to another sign on the right for "Old Lebanon Campgrounds".
From Batesville area, travel South on I-55 to Winona, exit onto Hwy 82 East traveling toward Eupora. Take Hwy 9 South to Ackerman then take a Right on Hwy 12. Travel less than .5 mile and you will come to South Union Road on the right. Go 2.8 miles until you come to the sign on the right for Old Lebanon.
