Video Memorial TributeCol. Wallace G. Cox, US Army (Retired), age 83, passed away peacefully at Timeless Grace Assisted Living in Pearl River County on February 11, 2017. At his passing, he was attended by numerous loved ones, a loving staff at Timeless Grace and God’s escort of angels. Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, February 15, 2017 in the Martin Willingham Memorial Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with interment to follow in Forrest Memorial Park in Batesville, MS with full military honors. The family will be receiving friends two hours prior to the service at Wells Funeral Home.Col. Cox is survived by his wife, the former Billie Rance Terry and three children, Lt. Col. Wallace G. Cox, Jr. US Army (Retired) (Martha) of Carriere, MS, Carol Cox Moore (Scott) of Carriere, MS and Cindy Cox Herzog (Richard) of Brentwood, TN. He also leaves behind six grandchildren, Kahlee Moore, Shelby Moore, Brock Moore, Jessica Cox, Emily Herzog and Clay Herzog. Col. Cox was born September 18, 1933 near Lambert, MS in a house still standing today. He graduated from Crowder High School in 1952 where he met his wife of 60 years. He was also a graduate of Northwest Mississippi Junior College in Senatobia, MS and the University of Southern Mississippi where he earned a B.S. degree in Business Administration. He was one of Quitman County’s most distinguished soldiers. He had a long and successful military career that spanned from the Korean War era to the Persian Gulf War. He served overseas two tours of duty in Germany, one in Korea and one in Vietnam. His military awards include the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star Medal, the Air Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, three Army Commendation Medals, two Army Achievement Medals, and numerous other awards and campaign medals. In retirement he was a member of both the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. The discipline and patriotism he learned in the Army never left him, as friends and family will attest. Wallace was a dedicated family man, a great husband, father and friend. Uncle Wallace was loved and admired by a large extended family on both his and wife Billie’s sides. He was full of humor and loved sports. He was Crowder High School’s very first quarterback and his love for football spanned his entire life. Most importantly, Wallace was a good Christian man. He was willing to help friend and stranger alike. He was a Baptist, an ordained deacon and a Gideon. He was a member of Roseland Park Baptist Church in Picayune at the time of his death. Previously, he had been a long time member of Blue Lake Baptist Church in Crowder, MS.
