Prudie Meredith Garton Moss, age 96, passed away Wednesday afternoon, August 31, 2016 at Starkville Manor Nursing Home in Starkville, MS. Ms. Moss is the widow of the late Byron Maddox "Tootsie" Moss.
Funeral services for Ms. Moss will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday September 5, 2016 in the Martin Willingham Memorial Chapel of Wells Funeral Home in Batesville. The family will receive friends beginning at 11:00 a.m. prior to the service. Interment will follow at Magnolia Cemetery in Batesville. Mr. Michael Bates and Mr. Robert Rawson will officiate the service.
Prudie Meredith Garton Moss born March 7, 1920 to the late Kyle and Effie Crockett Meredith in Independence, MS. Prudie was an All-State basketball player in TN during high school for Whitehaven and went on to play for Hinds Jr. College on scholarship. During her lifetime she worked for the Bank of Batesville and was the bookkeeper for the Panola County Co-op. Prudie was a member of the Batesville Church of Christ.
She leaves one son, Marty Walter Garton, Starkville MS, three grandchildren Byron Maurice Garton of Vicksburg MS, Christopher Somers Garton of Maben MS, and Timothy Walter Garton of Brandon MS, and 5 great grandchildren. She leaves behind one brother John Calvin Meredith of Kansas City MO, and one sister Mildred Meredith Hayek of Cordova TN.
Preceded in death were her husbands Marty Walter Garton of Millville NJ, and Byron “Tootsie” Moss of Batesville MS. Also preceded in death are two brothers, Doris Kyle Meredith of Memphis TN, and Walter Lee Meredith of Hernando MS, and three sisters Olive Meredith McCullum of Collinsville TN, Christel Meredith Haynes of Olive Branch MS, and Evelyn Meredith Hall of Whitehaven TN.
