Lucius Bernard Phelps
Lucius Bernard Phelps, age 87, passed away on Monday, June 16, 2008, at his home in Courtland, Mississippi. He was born on February 14, 1921, in Panola County, to the late Edward Lawrence Phelps and Stella Smith Phelps of Batesville, Mississippi. Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, June 18, 2008 at Wells Funeral Home. Interment will take place at Pilgrims Rest Baptist Church Cemetery in Batesville, Mississippi with full Military Honors. Rev. Fred Pearrow and Rev. Billy Credille will be officiating. He was a graduate of Black Jack High School, Mississippi State University, and Naval Officers’ Training School at Notre Dame University. He served with the 7th Fleet Amphibious Unit in the Pacific in World War II as the ship’s engineer and supply officer. He was a member of Gideons International, a lay speaker, and school teacher. He was a member of Pilgrims Rest Baptist Church, where he served as a teacher and a deacon for fifty-five years. He had retired from the U.S. Postal Service as a rural mail carrier and from farming. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Martha McCown Phelps, of Courtland; one son, Donald Bernard Phelps (wife, Angie) of Courtland; three daughters, Teresa Wright (husband, Willis) of Batesville, Martha Lynn Bowles (husband, Dean) of Courtland, and Annette McMahan of Batesville; and one sister, Faye Carvan (husband, Homer) of Enid. He also leaves seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Louis Phelps and Audley “Jake” Phelps, and one great-grandson, Davy Bryant.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be sent to Pilgrims Rest Baptist Church Education Building Fund, 470 Pilgrims Rest Road, Batesville, Mississippi 38606, or to charity of choice.
