Live Video Streaming of Funeral ServiceDonald Wayne "Don" Mills, age 58, husband of Ann McCurdy Mills, passed away at his home in Pope, MS on Friday afternoon, October 11, 2013. Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, October 15, 2013 at Wells Funeral Home Chapel with interment to follow in Chapel Hill Cemetery in Pope, MS. Dr. Gary Berry and Bro. Melvin Crawley will be officiating. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 5:00 - 8:00 P.M. at Wells Funeral Home. Don was born in Batesville, MS to Noel Douglas & Mary Fisher Mills on February 7, 1955. He was a member of Pope Baptist Church, Pope, MS. Many remember Don as a Law Enforcement officer. Before retiring in 2007, he served and protected the Oxford community for 23 years as a Lieutenant with the Oxford Police Department. During his tenure with OPD, Don served as a Uniform Support officer, Training & Evidence officer and gunsmith. Don competed as a sniper with the S.W.A.T. team and worked with H.A.W.K. (Handling Alcohol Warrants & K- 9's). People couldn't help but see Don enjoyed the aspects of law enforcement. In addition to his duties with OPD, he also served as a firearms instructor and Range Master at the F.W. "Buddy" East Training Complex. Don was a proud member of the National Rifle Association, Lafayette County Law Enforcement Officers Association and S.T.O.R.M. (Sobriety Trained Officers Representing Mississippi). The family whom hold his memory most dear, include his wife, Ann McCurdy Mills of Pope; 2 daughters: Heather Mills Samuels (Matt) of Oxford, MS and Elizabeth Mills of Pope; 2 sons: Davy Cox & Rich Cox (Tiffany) also of Pope; one sister: Sue Mills of Batesville, MS along with 3 brothers: Douglas Mills of Clarksville, TN, James "Jimmy" Mills of Batesville and Sammy Mills of Oxford. His four grandchildren include: Hailee Cox, Michael Cox, Lori Beth Cox & Mary Kate Samuels; step-grandchildren include: Blair & Blake Champion. The Mills family would be honored if memorial donations were given to any of the following: Pope Baptist Church, P.O. Box 34, Pope, MS 38658; The Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, Kansas 66675; or the Baptist Children's Village, P.O. Box 27, Clinton, MS 39060-0027.
