Click Here To View Video Memorial TributeGaines Byron Smith, age 84, passed away Thursday evening, April 26, 2012 at Tri-Lakes Medical Center in Batesville, MS. The Funeral Mass and visitation will be held on Monday, April 30, 2012, at St. Mary's Catholic Community Church. Visitation will be from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. with Rosary at 2:00 p.m. and Funeral Mass to follow at 2:30 p.m with Father Sam Messina officiating. Burial to follow in Magnolia Cemetery, Batesville, MS with military honors. Mr. Smith was born to Myrtle Dawson Smith & Elmer Sydney Smith, Sr. on August 23, 1927 in Roosevelt, LA. Gaines was a retired jeweler and watch maker having worked in the industry over 60 years. Among many accomplishments in his life, he lived the american dream and opened a family business, known as Plaza Jewelers in Batesville, MS. Mr. Smith served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Community in Batesville. He is survived by his daughter, Lisa Smith Gray of Batesville, MS; son, Mark Deaton Smith of Bateville, MS and a brother, Stanley G. Smith of Vicksburg, MS; 4 Grandchildren and 6 Great-Grandchildren. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ruth Deaton Smith, and a brother, Elmer S. Smith, Jr. The family asks that memorials be made to St. Mary's Catholic Community, P.O. Box 569, Batesville, MS 38606 or to the charity of the donor's choice. Serving as pallbearers for Mr. Smith will be Chad Smith, Chris Smith, Stephen Smith, Ben Pearson, Ronnie Darby and Neal Hockaday.
