Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, April 7, in Lee Chapel at First Baptist Church, Batesville, MS with Dr. Tommy Snyder officiating. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until service time on Saturday. Interment will follow in Magnolia Cemetery, Batesville, MS.
Earl was born August 18, 1918 in Batesville, MS, the son of John C. and Flora Hawkins Broome. He was a graduate of Mississippi State University, and was an active member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. Earl was a veteran of the United States Army Air Corp. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Batesville, MS, where he served as a deacon.
On December 20, 1942, Earl married Mary Alice Whitaker of Batesville, MS.
While a resident of MS, Earl worked at Grenada Farms as an accountant, served as the Administrator for Panola County, and worked for the Irby Ford dealership in Batesville, MS. This sparked his interest in the automobile industry, and in 1956 Earl joined General Motors Corporation in Memphis, TN. During his career with General Motors, the Broome family moved to St. Louis, MO in 1957, Dallas, TX in 1958, and Kansas City, MO in 1961, where he retired in 1983 as the Kansas City Branch Manager for Motors Holding Division of General Motors.
Earl was active in the General Motors Retirees Club. He was a member of Wornall Road Baptist Church, where he served as a Sunday School teacher for many years, sang in the choir, and served as a deacon. Earl worked with the Boy Scouts for many years, taking the scouts on Canadian canoe trips, and he was an honorary warrior in the tribe of Mic-O-Say. He served as a docent at the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library, a member of the John Knox men’s choir, and a member of the Honorary Board of Directors for Baptist Hospital.
Earl was preceded in death by four siblings, Johnny Broome, Bill Broome, Tom Broome, and Lucille Broome Todd, all of Batesville, MS, two infant sons, Ben and Stephen, and son, Brent in 2000.
Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Mary Alice (Whitaker), Lee’s Summit, MO, Earl Broome, Jr. and his wife, Lily, Lexington, KY, Paul Broome, and his wife, Judy, Grain Valley, MO, Joe Broome, and his wife, Suzanne, Overland Park, KS, daughter-in-law, Therese Kearney, and her husband, David, Overland Park, KS, Eleven Grandchildren, Twelve Great-Grandchildren, Two Great-Great Grandchildren.
Earl was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He engaged in and remained active in church activities throughout his life. He lived his life in faith and with integrity. He could easily deliver and always appreciated a good joke. His exuberance for life was infectious. He will be missed by many, many friends and family.
