Joseph Barney Pickett

Joseph Barney Pickett age 89, husband of Elizabeth Jones Pickett, died Tuesday afternoon 7/19/11 at his home in Pope, MS. The funeral service with military honors will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 23, 2011 at Wells Funeral Home Chapel with visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. in the chapel. Mr. Pickett will be buried at Chapel Hill Cemetery. Mr. Pickett was born in Pope, MS on April 27, 1922 to John Henry & Virgie Nelson Pickett. He served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps for 4 years and of those years, he served 23 months in the Pacific. Mr. Barney was the 73rd person to receive the Congressional Medal Of Honor during peace time. He taught agriculture for several years in Itta Bena & Morgan City schools. Most people may remember Mr. Pickett as the Post Master of Pope, MS post office, where he served for 45 years. He was a member of the Pope United Methodist Church. Mr. Pickett's survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Jones Pickett of Pope, MS; 3 sons, John Mark Pickett and wife Rachel of Pope, MS, Joseph Rodney Pickett of Pope, MS, J. Stan Pickett and wife Sonya, of Greenville, IL; sister, Agnes Pickett Hartzell of Pope, MS and 4 grandchildren.
